About 100 former staff of Great Duke hotel today protested
in front of the hotel in Phnom Penh to demand severance pay following its
closure.
Toch Kosal, a representative of the former staff, today said
that since Great Duke’s shutter, the management had agreed to pay their last
wages and severance pay, but failed to offer enough severance pay according to
the labour law.
“The company has not agreed to give severance pay and other
benefits because some of us had worked for the hotel for about ten years,” Mr
Kosal said.
In December last year, the management announced that the
hotel closed down for economic reasons effective December 31.
Since June last year, the hotel has been facing protests
from staff after it fell behind in paying their salaries.
Opened in 1996 as the InterContinental Phnom Penh Hotel, it
was officially rebranded as The Great Duke Phnom Penh Hotel in 2018 after a new
owner took over.
