Cambodia to mark World Wetlands Day in Banteay Meanchey Province |
Cambodia will observe the World Wetlands Day in Poychar
commune, Phnom Srok district, Banteay Meanchey province on Feb 6, the Ministry
of Environment said.
Organised by the Ministry of Environment in cooperation with
Banteay Meanchey provincial administration, the forthcoming celebration will be
held at Sok An Poychar High School under the theme “Wetlands and Biodiversity.”
The commemoration of the World Wetlands Day is aimed to
raise public awareness on the importance of wetland ecosystems, promote wise
use and management of wetlands as well as to show off the richness of
biodiversity in wetland areas.
World Wetlands Day to raise global awareness about the vital
role of wetlands for people and our planet. This day also marks the date of the
adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on Feb. 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of
Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Cambodia has now five Ramsar Sites – Boeung Chhmar and
Associated River System and Floodplain, Koh Kapik and Associated Islets, Middle
Stretches of Mekong River North of Stung Treng, Prek Toal Ramsar Site, and
Stung Sen Ramsar Site.
